Kippenheim and the Surrounding Area

Kippenheim is located halfway between Strasbourg (35 min) and Freiburg (35 min) at the foot of the Black Forest in a scenic setting and is easily accessible by public transportation. This commercial, residential, and wine-growing community, with approximately 5,100 residents and a total area of 2,091 hectares, is situated in a beautiful setting between the Rhine Valley and the foothills of the Black Forest. There are a number of swimming lakes here, as well as, of course, the heated Kippenheim swimming pool. A tennis and fitness center is located almost within sight of our vacation apartment. An indoor riding arena, fishing lakes, and many hiking trails round out the offerings in our community.

The exceptional location of our vineyards – the Kippenheimer Haselstaude – is utilized by local winemakers to produce wines that stand up to any comparison. In the Schmieheim district, there is one of the last small breweries, whose beers are highly regarded throughout the region for their quality.

It’s 10 km to Europapark.

There are countless places to visit in the immediate and wider area. We can help you choose if you let us know your specific interests. You’ll find almost everything here – whether you’re a glider pilot, model airplane enthusiast, mineralogist, or skateboarder, you’ll be surprised by what the region has to offer. Would you like to pan for gold, take a boat ride through one of Germany’s last primeval forests in the oxbow lakes of the Rhine, enjoy a leisurely wine tasting of our Kippenheim wines, or take beautiful tours on the mountain roads of the Black Forest with your “Hühnerschreck”? We’d be happy to help. For gardening enthusiasts, a visit to Lahr’s Stadtpark – a small but lovely botanical garden – is well worth it, as is, of course, the State Garden Show in Lahr starting in 2018.

If you’re coming from farther away and aren’t yet familiar with the city, a visit to “Strasbourg, the capital of our region,” is practically a must. You should treat yourself to an afternoon boat ride on the canals of the Ill, a visit to the cathedral, and a stroll through the tanners’ quarter (Petite France). You’ll get by just fine there even without knowing any French. Many people in Alsace speak Alsatian, which is an Alemannic dialect. You’ll rarely hear Standard German spoken here anyway.

In addition to Europapark, there are many other worthwhile destinations for day trips:

In the Black Forest

The Steinwasen Mountain Wildlife Park; the climbing park in Kenzingen; the Vogt farms in the Gutach Valley; the medieval rafting town of Gengenbach; the Triberg Waterfalls; the city of Freiburg; the Galaxy Water Park in Titisee-Neustadt; the Dorotheenhütte in Wolfach, and a glimpse into the future: starting in 2019, the “Europa-Park Water World.”

In the Vosges Mountains

The St. Odile Abbey, the Butterfly Park in Hunawihr, Affenberg, Hochkönigsburg Castle, the Alsace Wine Route with its countless well-preserved medieval villages, such as Riquewihr or Obernai, or a trip to the Vosges Mountains with a stop at a ferme (a simple little restaurant serving mainly produce from its own farm), and of course Colmar with the Issenheim Altarpiece at the Unterlinden Museum.

And if the weather isn’t so nice, why not drive to Erstein and visit the Würth Museum?

On the way back, you could pick up a few French specialties and enjoy them for dinner in your vacation rental.
